Overview

Training For All New Leaders

Access the BSA Online Learning Center at www.scouting.org , on the My Scouting tab. This takes you to a page where you will create your own profile that enables you to take online courses, and keep track of your progress.

Need assistance - having trouble with My Scouting or Online Learning Center? E-mail myscouting@netbsa.org with your logon e-mail address and contact information. Please include your council name (Greater Niagara Frontier)  and headquarters city (Buffalo, NY). Our representatives are available between 7 a.m. (CT) and 7 p.m. (CT) Monday through Friday. You will receive a response by the close of business on the day following your inquiry.

Fast Start Training:

  • This is the first step for any new volunteer
  • Taken immediately after a new leader registers and before he or she meets with any youth.
  • Provides an immediate comfort level for new leaders and enables them to say, “I can do this!”
  • This course will consist of a videotape, available at the Council Service Center.
  • This training is also available using the Online Learning Center.  Cub Scout, Boy Scout and Venture Leader training are accessible through this link.
    • These courses can help adult leaders deliver quality Scouting experiences to youth. A log-in is required, however anyone may create a user account and view the courses. Registered members of the BSA may provide their member numbers (as part of the user profile) to receive credit.Can be viewed in a group setting, or alone by the new volunteer.
  • Time: less then one hour.

Youth Protection Training:

  • This training is mandated by the Greater Niagara Frontier Council for any adult who will be in contact with youth.
  • Mandatory before a unit may obtain a tour permit or camp on Council properties.
  • This training is available on the Council website (www.wnyscouting.org) with a test upon completion.
  • Also, offered at the beginning of all New Leader Essential Training courses beginning fall of 2003 for those who do not have Internet access.
  • Numbered cards are presented upon completion of this training to ensure compliance.
  • Time: approximately 90 minutes.

Youth Protection Training: Venturing Program:

  • A separate version of Youth Protection Training (YPT) has been developed to suit the unique aspects of the Venturing program. This training is available in both English and Spanish. 

This is Scouting:

  • Provides an overview of the Scouting movement, including history, values, programs, youth protection, community involvement, training, and so on. The module consists of six video sections, each followed by a brief quiz. Completion is noted automatically in the BSA training records database if the module is experienced online. Estimated time to complete: 50 minutes.
